- Ask neighbors if they are missing a pet
- See if the animal looks hungry, malnourished or sick
- Make sure the animal is really homeless and not just out of its yard (look for collars, tags, etc)
- Call animal control if you have any questions
- Understand leash laws (The Dalles has no leash law.)

Best Care for Animals:
|
Is animal abuse/neglect the same or similar in all areas? No. The Dalles, for example, does not have a high rate of homeless animals, and numerous shelters are not needed. If, however, some sort of dog/animal is more demanded in some areas than others, the area’s shelters can do dog-trades so they have more of a specific type.
What are some forms of neglect? Neglect includes:
- Un-clipped and overgrown hair
- Matted and dirty hair
- Long toenails
- Starvation/hunger
- If an animal is eating garbage
- If an animals is Injured and remains unhelped
